How We Determine Your City

Your city is determined by first getting your GPS coordinates, then using reverse geocoding to match those coordinates to administrative boundaries. The geocoding service identifies which municipality your coordinates fall within.

Depending on local governance boundaries, you may see a metropolitan city, borough, township, or municipality name.

Why Identifying Your City Matters

  • Travel & Transit — Confirm your metropolitan district when exploring unfamiliar regions
  • Local Business Services — Find municipal government desks, emergency services, and transit hubs
  • Timezone Alignment — Verify local solar and administrative timekeeping zones
  • Emergency Coordination — Inform first responders of your jurisdictional township

FAQ

Your phone combines GPS satellite signals, nearby Wi-Fi networks, and cell towers to compute your coordinates. This page then matches those coordinates against city boundary data to return the municipality you are standing in.
Administrative boundaries don't always match postal zones or metropolitan areas. You may live in one municipality but be served by a neighboring city's post office or media market. The result reflects official municipal boundaries.
No — a point can only be inside one municipal boundary at a time. On the outskirts, however, the addresses and postal zones of a neighboring city may apply, which is why the result can differ from your postal address.
Yes, but accuracy drops. Without a clear view of the sky, your phone relies on Wi-Fi and cell positioning, which can be off by several hundred meters — enough to matter near a city boundary.
