GPS determines location through direct radio wave physics. Your phone contains a miniaturized antenna that captures radio waves transmitted from 20,200 km above in medium Earth orbit.

Because the signals travel at the speed of light, calculating arrival time differences allows your phone's processor to compute its precise latitude, longitude, and altitude relative to the WGS 84 ellipsoid.

How IP Geolocation Works

IP geolocation is not a physical measurement—it is a database correlation. Every packet sent across the internet contains your public IP address. Companies like MaxMind, IPinfo, and DB-IP maintain proprietary databases that map IP blocks to:

  • The ISP owning that block of IP addresses (e.g., Comcast, AT&T, Vodafone).
  • The geographical coordinates of the ISP's regional gateway router or data center.

Because an ISP might assign the same block of IPs across an entire metropolitan area or county, IP-based positioning will never be able to identify your street address.

Privacy Comparison: Which Is Safer?

Browser W3C Geolocation (GPS):

Under the W3C Geolocation API standard, no website can read your GPS coordinates without your explicit, opt-in consent. The prompt displays every time unless you permanently whitelist the domain. On MyLocationLab, your coordinates are processed 100% locally in your browser and never logged.

IP Address:

Every web server you visit automatically receives your public IP address to deliver the HTML page. While it cannot pinpoint your house, it routinely reveals your city, state, postal code, and Internet Service Provider without prompting for permission.

Which Method Should You Use?

  • Use GPS When: You need turn-by-turn navigation, exact street addresses, elevation calculations, or precise distances.
  • Use IP Geolocation When: You are on a desktop workstation without GPS, want a coarse regional weather forecast, or need to detect which country or currency to default to on an e-commerce site.
