How Elevation and Altitude Are Calculated
Elevation refers to the vertical height of a geographic point above the Earth's reference geoid or mean sea level (MSL). This tool combines native device GNSS sensors with satellite radar topography models (SRTM).
Understanding Elevation vs. Altitude
- Elevation: The vertical distance of a ground location or physical landmark above mean sea level.
- Altitude: The vertical distance of an airborne object (such as an aircraft, drone, or satellite) above either ground level (AGL) or sea level (AMSL).
- Geoidal Undulation: The difference between the WGS-84 mathematical reference ellipsoid and Earth's true gravitational geoid (EGM96).
Barometric Pressure and Boiling Point Variations
As elevation increases, atmospheric air column pressure drops. Consequently, water boils at lower temperatures at higher elevations (for example, ~93°C at 2,000 meters versus 100°C at sea level).
