Whether you are meeting a friend at a crowded festival, coordinating roadside assistance, or letting family track your journey home, knowing how to share your location quickly and securely is an essential modern skill.
There are two distinct types of location sharing: Live Real-Time Tracking (which continuously broadcasts your movement for a set duration) and Static Pin Sharing (which sends a single snapshot of your latitude and longitude). In this guide, we show you how to do both across every major platform and how to generate private web links using our Share Location tool and Location QR Code Generator.
Generate a Private Location Share Link
Get your current GPS position and generate a one-click share link compatible with Apple Maps, Google Maps, and SMS messaging without installing any apps.
1. Sharing Location on Apple iPhone (iOS / iMessage / Apple Maps)
Apple devices offer native location sharing directly within Messages and the Find My application:
Open a conversation in Messages > Tap the + icon > Select Location. Choose either 'Send Pin' (static location) or 'Share' (Live location for 1 hour, until end of day, or indefinitely).
Open the Find My app > Tap the People tab > Tap Start Sharing Location > Enter the contact's name > Choose duration. This allows family members to see your live battery status and arrival notifications.
2. Sharing Location on Android & Google Maps
Google Maps provides cross-platform live location sharing that works seamlessly between Android, iPhone, and desktop computers:
Share Real-Time Movement in Google Maps
Open Google Maps > Tap your profile circle in the top right > Tap Location sharing > Tap New share > Select duration (e.g. 1 hour or 'Until you turn this off') > Select contacts or copy the private sharing link.
Drop & Share a Static Pin
Press and hold anywhere on Google Maps to drop a red pin. Tap the bottom info sheet, tap Share, and copy the coordinate link.
3. Sharing Location on WhatsApp & Telegram
Messaging apps allow end-to-end encrypted location sharing:
- WhatsApp: Open a chat > Tap the + or paperclip icon > Select Location. Choose 'Share Live Location' (15 min, 1 hr, or 8 hrs) or 'Send Your Current Location'.
- Telegram: Open chat > Tap paperclip icon > Select Location > Choose 'Send My Current Location' or 'Share My Live Location for...'. Telegram also allows proximity alerts when contacts are within a set distance.
4. Sharing via Browser QR Codes (Contactless Sharing)
If you are organizing an event, giving flyers to attendees, or displaying coordinates on a poster, generating a QR code is the most efficient method:
Create a Scannable Location QR Code
Encode any latitude, longitude, or map link into a high-resolution QR code that opens instantly in Google Maps or Apple Maps when scanned by any phone camera.
5. Location Privacy: Best Practices for Sharing
Sharing your geolocation is sensitive personal data. Follow these essential safety guidelines:
- Always set a time limit: Never share live location 'indefinitely' unless with trusted family members. Default to 1 hour.
- Audit active shares: Regularly check Google Maps > Location Sharing and iOS Find My to terminate stale share sessions.
- Review EXIF photo metadata: Photos taken on smartphones embed precise GPS coordinates in EXIF tags. Remove them before posting publicly.
